Tupistra nutans

Archive entry 31.12.06

A tall growing broad leaved evergreen with tiny little clusters of green flowers at the base. I got it from Kobakoba, and one of life's gentle satisfactions is watching the clump get fatter and fatter. ( I am turning into such a po-faced old git!)
Grows wild in the eastern Himalayas. The nursery of Ganesh Mani Pradhan say that the fleshy flowers can be used in curry, and taste of button mushrooms. I haven't tried it.

Plant Delights Nursery say:

"Tupistra nutans is first cousin to the great shade garden plant rohdea, but virtually unknown in popular literature. T. nutans is an amazing Indian native that makes a nice clump resembling an aspidistra on steroids. Each clump is composed of 3' long narrow dark green leaves that are held upright...great in the shade garden or in an indoor container. In late fall, spikes of 4" pendulous mustard-yellow flowers with a purple center are produced in abundance. In India, the entire inflorescence of open flowers and buds makes a delightful slightly bitter curry, which tastes like button mushrooms! I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to give up on McDonald's yet."
