A large flowered for of uncertain parentage. It has been slow to divide for me, so it will be a while before it shows its full potential.
Quite large, quite purple and quite hardy. I got bored with it eventually and gave it away. Raised by John May. In his obituary in 'The Plantsman', Edith May writes: "He also raised Tulbaghia 'John May's Special', probably a hybrid between T. fragrans and T. violacea." Farmyard Nurseries say: "Tulbaghia violacea ‘John Mays Special’ is a robust and distinctive variety of society garlic, celebrated for its larger-than-average, lilac-pink blooms and strong, upright growth. Flowering from late spring through autumn, it produces clusters of star-shaped blossoms above clumps of slender, grey-green, garlic-scented foliage. Both ornamental and functional, its foliage and flowers are edible, often used in culinary dishes for a mild garlic flavour. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for borders, containers, or herb gardens. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, ‘John Mays Special’ adds long-lasting colour and fragrance to sunny garden spaces." |
