This is the real Tulaghia simmleri with pink flowers and very broad leaves. It hasn't been hardy enough to persist with me, either
outside or in a cold greenhouse. Canio Vosa says: "Tulbaghia simmleri is a very decorative and fairly hardy species widely cultivated, usually under the name of T. fragrans or T. pulchella, in parks and garden in tropical and sub-tropical countries and in cool greenhouses in temperate regions. It is endemic of a rather small area of the Transvaal, in the northern Drakensberg. It is found as isolated plants on rocky ledges and in fairly thick colonies in light tropical forest, together with Clivia miniata Regel and epiphytic orchids (mostly Polystachya sp.) and ferns, at moderate altiude." In thir catalogue for 2000, Odyssey Bulbs (USA) wrote: "Among the most floriferous and fragrant of bulbs, sweet garlic produces its starburst clusters of hyacinth-scented, lilac flowers for many weeks in spring and spordically throughout the rest of the year. At 18 inches tall, it's just right for a cool, sunny window ledge or greenhouse. The foot-long, strappy leaves are quietly attractive (and only lightly scented). Subtropical, Transvaal. Zone 8." |
