I am rather fond of Ulmus parvifolia and its selected Japanese cultivars. I got this one from Tim Ingram in 2017 and planted it in the garden but unfortunately
it was dead by 2023. In 2000 the Glasshouseworks catalogue said: "Dwarf Chinese Elm with richly toothed small lvs; popular as bonsai for the heavily textured bark." Ideas for Gardens say: "A Carl Young introduction with very interesting elongated medium green leaves to 1 1/2 inches. It has the same corky bark as 'Seiju' but takes a little longer to develop, but it grows a little faster. Ultimate height is perhaps 8-10 feet." Bob Brown said on the Cotswold Garden Flowers website says: "Pretty dense shrub with rows of small serrated leaves, yellow autumn colour, swept shape, 3m but slow. Easy. Finally got elm disease." |
