There is a short list of Vanda that might possibly tolerate life in my cold greenhouse. V. tessellata is one of the larger growing
species from the Himalayas, growing at altitudes up to 1,500m. A plant became available and I decided to give it a try, probably recklessly. Unfortunately it didnt survive the severe radiation frost in December 2022. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Indian Subcontinent to China (Yunnan) and Indo-China. It is an epiphytic subshrub and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome." The Internet Orchid Species Encyclopedia says: "Found in the Chinese Himalayas, Assam India, Bangladesh, eastern Himalayas, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, western Himalayas and Myanmar at elevations around 1500 meters as a medium to large sized, cool growing epiphyte with a climbing stem carrying linear, narrow, conduplicate, tridentate apically leaves that blooms in the summer, fall and early winter on a sub-erect, 6 to 10" [15 to 50 cm] long inflorescence carrying 5 to 12, fragrant grape to lilac scented, long-lived flowers." |
