Another Viburnum that has somehow been overlooked for several decades in the garden. I was given a rooted cutting in the early 1980's
and it is now a large, rather sombre shrub with irregular variegation. I have had it for so long that it has become familiar but if it died it would leave
a terrible space. I think it is a glorious thing but I have a friend whom adores the colour and texture of leaves and who goes into raptures over Trees and Shrubs online pull no punches either: "Wind-tattered or starved plants are downright ugly, and are responsible for the execration in which this species is held by some gardeners." "Adding to the demerits of the species, 'Variegatum' has irregular splashes of white in its foliage. It has been in cutivation since 1935, but as Edwards and Marshall (2019) say, it is 'Of curiosirty value only.' We feel one would be very curious indeed to wish to grow it." I have searched online and I think I am the only person who loves it, which is perhaps why it is so profoundly unstable and prone to sudden reversion. |
