I am a great fan of all of the Vincas, so there was no way that I was going to resist this ridiculous variegated form. Once planted out, it has
produced a lot of all white shoots, but I am hoping it is just a phase. Selected by Joseph H. Wojciechowski in the USA and protected by Plant Patent PP11809. Farmyard Nurseries say: "A good reliable boldly variegated evergreen groundcover perennial whose ability to withstand any conditions makes it special. Sun, shade, wet or dry, not fussy – no problem. A commodity plant that spreads rapidly, covering ground quickly and effectively with the minimum of fuss. Height 30cm (1′) Spread 1m (3′) per year. The Plant Patent says: "The new Vinca is a naturally-occurring branch sport of an unidentified selection of Vinca maculata (not patented) with solid green leaves. The new Vinca was discovered and selected by the Inventor in March, 1996, within a population of plants of the unidentified Vinca maculata selection grown in a cultivated area in Ortonville, Mich. The new Vinca was selected on the basis of its unique variegated foliage." Chris Adam says: "'Wojo's Gem' is a lovely plant with pale cream central variegation and is reportedly a sport of 'Maculata'. It is not hardy with me, and an American acquaintance finds the same and uses it solely for summer bedding." |
