A strange herbaceous plant with semi-twining stems that ranges across the eastern Mediterranean from Greece to Iran. My plant was grown by a friend from seed collected in Georgia. It has been easy in the garden here, growing in the shade of a large pine, and then growing in full sun when then pine blew down. Black flowers are a significant part of its sinister charm. It doesn't set seed outside and it didn't set seed in the greenhouse. I have only managed to propagate it by division of the tough rootstock, after which it recovered without trouble. There seems to be very little information published either conventionally or online, but Growild Nursery say: "Vincetoxicum in Latin means ‘conqueror of poison’ and comes from the traditional use of this plant as an antidote to poisons and snakebites." |
