The charmingly named Dog-strangling vine, a vigorous twining species. I haven't tried it outside yet but it has grown very vigorously in the greenhouse. Light brown flowers produced in the first
year from seed. Native to southern Europe, in the USA it has become an invasive species. The Invasive Species Centre in Ontario says: "Dog-strangling vine (DSV), also known as European swallow-wort, is found in parts of Ontario, southern Quebec, and several American states. This plant grows aggressively by wrapping itself around trees and other plants, and can grow up to 2 m high. DSV forms dense stands that overwhelm and crowd out native plants and young trees, preventing forest regeneration. The plant produces bean-shaped seed pods 4-7 cm long and pink to dark purple star-shaped flowers." |
