This always seems like a rather bloodthirsty colour, but it is one of the first to flower in spring, and very welcome.
I bought it from Groves and their label said: "A small but prolific flowering variety that is carmine in colour and is scented." Roy Coombs said in 'Violets': "'Annie' (C. W. Groves & Son, Bridport, Dorset, 2001). Small to medium-sized flowers of carmine, deeper at upper centre of middle lower petal. Slightly more purple than 'Perle Rose' and a much longer flowering season." The American Violet Society register says: "'Annie' - A chance seedling of Viola odorata grown by Clive Groves of England. Bright, rose-pink (70A RHS colour chart) flowers (and spurs) are of standard shape and medium/small (2cm) in size. They are highly scented and borne on medium/short (6-9 cm), light green stems of medium thickness. Has medium/light green, heart-shaped/round leaves and a low/medium spreading growth habit. Introduced in 2002. Won Silver Medal at the 1st International Violet Contest / 7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004, in Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France." |
