White frosted edges to the petals make it a distinctive cultivar (I hope). I bought it from Groves, who raised it. Their label says: "Sweetly scented rose-pink flowers with a white edge appear in early spring. This hardy sweet violet is easy to grow in a lightly shaded not too dry position." Roy Coombs says: "(Groves, 1985; chance seedling found near 'Opera'). Good sized magenta-pink 72C flowers with a purple reverse. Strong scent." The American Violet Society register says: "'Charles Winston Groves' - A seedling from Viola odorata ‘Lees Peachy Pink’ pollinated by Viola odorata ‘John Raddenbury’, grown by Clive Groves of England. Large scented flowers with petals that are characteristically pointed at their tips. White with an overlay of pale mauve, which follow the veins of the petals. Flowers are found on medium length stems and have purple spurs. Heart shaped, green leaves have a medium matt finish, (because of the fine hairs on the surface) and are found on long stems. Growth pattern is vigorous, upright and mounded. Introduced in 2007. First exhibited during the 2nd International Violet Contest organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France. This contest was part of the 8th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2007 at the Escola Superior Agrária de Béjà, Portugal." |
