A number of good rich coloured forms have been raised by Groves of Bridport. This one is vigorous, but not as floriferous as I would like. Violetsblew says on Plant Lust: "Viola odorata "Diana Groves" definitely stands out in a crowd. When in bloom, its bright purple blooms washed in claret red seem almost alight, and they definitely catch the eye. The blooms are large and fragrant. (Groves Nursery, 1998) Gold medal winner of the 1st International Violet Congress, Toulouse 2004." Roy Coombs says: "'Diana Groves' (Groves, 1998; chance seedling). Large claret-red flowers." The American Violet Society register says: "‘Diana Groves’ - A seedling of Viola odorata ‘Clive Groves’ pollinated by Viola odorata ‘Lydia Groves’ grown by Clive Groves of England. Flowers are standard shape (with bottom two petals turned in) and are claret purple, (78A -72a of the RHS Colour chart) with spurs the same. They are borne on 8cm long, purplish, medium thick stems. Early blooms have best quality and colour. Heart shaped, mid-green leaves grow on the medium mounding plant. Won Gold Medal at the 1st International Violet Contest / 7th International Violet Meeting, held in February of 2004, in Toulouse, France. Meeting and contest were organised by Les Amis de la Violette, France." |
