It is a very beautiful flower, and I have to stifle a laugh every time I see it. (I should have grown out of it by now, but I haven't). Don't get me started, I'll only say somthing funny
and tasteless that will wake me up in the middle of the night filled with regret. Shire Plants say: "A strong growing variety with nicely scented flowers held well up on strong rose coloured stems. The flowers are near white with a variable flush of apricot-pink which intensifies to rose on the spur." and in a comment on facebook (18.11.2024) they add "Viola odorata 'Dick o the Hills' is a lovely soft pink scented sweet violet with a wonderfully evocative name. Who was Dick and which hills did he roam and why? If only we knew." In their online blog (21.01.2020) they say: "This is Viola odorata 'Dick o' the Hills', a sweet violet which has just started flowering and should be flowering strongly through to late spring. I like to think it was named after a wizened old shepherd, who wandered remote hills, tending his sheep. The reality may be more mundane, but I haven't been able to find out any information regarding its age or origin. Either way, it's a beautiful violet and one of my favourites." Roy Coombs stays tactfully tight-lipped. On Plant Lust, Violetsblew says: ""Dick o' the Hills" has blooms that are white but delicately tinged with pink. I grow this one mainly for its name, but old "Dick o' the Hills" has become a personal favorite among my scented violets." |
