A dark blue flowered seed strain. My plants perform rather poorly in flower. In 2004 the Longacre Plants catalogue said: "A seed strain quite near to the wild plant, a bit larger in the flower." Roy Coombs ponts out that the name should be 'Koningin Charlotte' and says: 'Koningin Charlotte' (Germany, 1900). Very fragrant blue 90B-88C. Very early flowering, from August onwards, and very free. A cultivar if the 'Quatre Saisons' type with flowers looking up into the sky. Regarded at The Violet Nurseries, Henfield and by Barrs as an improvement on 'California', but this view (which could indicate that wrongly named stocks were being commented on as 'Calfornia' or 'Madame Emile Arlene') was not widely shared. Also listed as 'Irene'." |
