'Cathy' is one of a large number of hybrids that have been raised based on Vriesea carinata. They are tough, flower reliably and make good house plants.
How this one will fare in the greenhouse remains to be seen. One of the darkest flowered of them, the bracts approach black when grown under ideal
conditions. It has been remarkably hardy, surviving without damage in a cold greenhouse for a decade (2016). BBC Gardeners World Magazine Online said: "Vrisea 'Cathy' is an eye-catching cultivar with a rosette of glossy green leaves and once in its lifetime, a sumptuous deep-red flower spike that lasts for months on end. When it has finished flowering the mother plant will die off, but not before producing a progeny of shoots, each of which have the potential to flower once fully grown plants themselves." Jungle Leaves in Germany say: "A very pretty, small Vriesea cultivar with a very dark red, almost black inflorescence. It reaches a diameter of about 25 to 30 cm with an inflorescence up to 30 cm tall. The color is truly unique among Vriesea. The bracts are dark red with black tips, and the flowers are yellow with green tips!" |
