I bought a lot of new species last year, and it hasn't worked out very well for me. All of the species have been available as
habitat collected seed in the last couple of years, so I had hoped that these would be true to name.
W.stenosiphon is a small growing species with a rather elegant habit and orange flowers. This whopping great thug is (very lovely but ) W. 'Ardernes White'. The Pacific Bulb Society says: "Watsonia stenosiphon L.Bolus grows on coarse rocky sandstone soils along the southern Cape coast. It rarely blooms except after fires, but then blooms in profusion the spring following a fire in the previous summer or fall. It grows from 20 to 45 cm. and has a slender long narrow perianth tube. Flowers are salmon-orange, occasionally mauve, often with a darker line in the lower midline of the lower three tepals." Peter Goldblatt says: Watsonia stenosiphon has a localised distribution along the southern Cape coast, extending from Kleinmond in the Caledon district in the east to the Agulhas Peninsula and cape Infanta in the east. It is restricted to coarse rocky sandstone soils, and is found mainly in flat areas at the foot of the coastal ranges in the area. Rarely blooming, except after fires, W. stenosiphom appears in profusion in October and early November in suitable habitats when the veld has been burned the previous summer or autumn." |
