Widely distributed, very hardy, and very bright pink. I have no idea about its parentage, but I have a very similar form of W.wilmanniae. It makes good compact clumps of foliage, the flower colour seems to vary from acid pink to deep cerise, depending on the light conditions.

I bought it from the Duchy Nursery in 1997 and the label said:

"June/August. Slender spikes of sugar pink tubular flowers 18-24". A South African Plant that likes deep, retentive soils, full sun and shelter."

There is a population of Watsonia hybrids growing on the slopes in Tresco Abbey Gardens and I am not sure whether this clone was selected at Tresco or grown from seed from the gardens. For many years Chiltern Seeds offered a seed mix from Tresco and it was widely distributed. Their description (1986) says:

"Watsonia'Tresco Hybrids'. The finest strain of Watsonia, evergreen and large flowered. With an unusually long flowering seson for Watsonias, they are outstanding for cutting and come in a wide range of colours including scarlets and oranges, whites, pinks, lilacs and purples, with combinations of many shades in between. Hardy with some protection in most of the country. 2-4ft."

In more modern times, Penberth Plants are offering 'Tresco Hybrids' and they say:

"This South African plant is a bulbous perennial. It has Gladioli type of flowers ranging from deep orange through to pink in mid summer. Height 1m and spread 60cm. Plant in a sunny position in a humous rich free draining soil. These make excellent pot plants as well as showy plants for borders."

Tresco Gardens say of their own hybrids:

"There are many different species of Watsonia, native to South Africa and flowering at different times of year. This particular species however is very special as it was ‘conceived’ on Tresco, a hybrid cross between two species previously flowering in the Abbey Garden. Watsonia Tresco Hybrid is characterised by a vibrant orange or peach coloured flower, blossoming during the summer months."

Whatever its origin, Watsonia 'Tresco Dwarf Pink' has a long history in cultivation. Pan Global Plants say:

"Watsonia 'Tresco Dwarf Pink'.
A tough British hybrid of this South African genus. Sugar-pink flowers in summer. Height 60cm. Sun and shelter, not too dry. One of the hardier forms."
