A very attractive small fern, well suited to an alpine garden. I had hoped that with a fair wind I would be able to keep it in a pot but I have a feeling that it hankered for the wild rocky places
and all I have to show is a single picture. Grown from spore originally by a local friend with more skill than I. Great Plant Pis say: "Woodsia polystichoides is a cute and charming "must have" fern. This deciduous fern is one of the first to emerge, arriving in late winter/early spring. Tiny pale-green fronds unfurl resisting the frost and cold of the season, gradually revealing long and narrow, arching fronds. Once fully developed, the holly fern woodsia bears a keen resemblance to a miniature version of our native sword fern, Polystichum munitum. The small stature of this fern demands a special place in the garden." Sue Olsen says: "This species is common among exposed rocks in the mountains of Japan, eastern Russia, Korea, China and Taiwan. Easily introduced to the sunny, fern forbidding sites of rock gardens, holly fern woodsia cheerfully cascades and meanders among rocks and keeps company with alpine fellow travellers. My garden plants are in neutral to slightly acid grit, with slick drainage and exposure more critical than soil makeup." |
