The true species is quite variable, flowers from red, through pink to white and I don't think this is it. This looks like Habranthus robustus in a cheery dark pink form.
These were seed from the Alpine Garden Society. They just appear out of the bare pots during late summer.
One day there is just some tatty grassy stuff in the pot, the next day, big pink flowers! My plants clearly show a stigma as long or longer than the stamens, which is not right for Z. fosteri .
Zephyranthes are notorious for spreading their seed about. The Pacific Bulb Society say: "Zephyranthes fosteri Traub is from Mexico, where it is known as "little May flower". Height: to about 45 cm. One way of avoiding confusion with Zephyranthes verecunda is that it has a stigma which is longer than the stamens, while the stigma of Zephyranthes fosteri is shorter than the stamens." Rob's Plants says: "Small species from Mexico with clear pink flowers. Its six petals have pointed tips, and make a fine backdrop to the bright yellow anthers. Ours first bloomed as a second-year plant, in mid-August. In its third year, flowers arrived earlier, by late May, but the individual plants are still small." |
