... out in the garden.

3rd March 2007

Ranunculus ficaria 'Chocolate Cream' .
You may have been wondering where all the Lesser Celandines have got to this year - this one is 'Choclate Cream' by the way. It all started last year when I moved them to make space for the Disporum and such like. They went into the shade tunnel for the summer and "I will have made space for them by the time they start to grow" (and pigs fly!). A very early start to the season last autumn meant that I put them out on the Crocosmia beds in December because there was nowhere else. A plague of munching bunnies promptly stripped them of their leaves, so there was a setback. The good news is that last week I finished making a bench specially for them, beyond the reach of all but the most athletic bunny, so with luck the problem is solved (And through the summer I will have somewhere to put the Roscoea). And we can all have a good laugh together as the best laid plans start to crumble.

3rd March 2007

Asarum campaniflorum .
I have three clones of Asarum campaniflorum. This is the smallest flowered (and most recent), but it is also the prettiest. The larger tubular flowers of the other forms are often distorted. This one is only just establishing in the pot, so the flowers will have to be removed soon to give the poor thing a chance, but hopefully it will produce enough pollen for the others to produce some seed.

3rd March 2007

Asarum maculatum BSWJ 1114 .
Every time I get a new Asarum I am amazed again. This delight came from Crug Farm Plants last year and has prospered in a cold greenhouse. I am sure it is hardy , but they flower so early that they get a bit weather beaten outside, and I like to stand around in the dry while I marvel!

3rd March 2007

Galanthus 'Chedworth' .
The snowdrops have been good this year, if a little eclipsed by Hellebores. Many of them are still quite tiny but they are showing signs of being happy in the woods , so I have a few more to plant out up there. During the week I have been digitising the slides I took in the 70's and 80's of snowdrops, so they might appear on the site before long.
This one is 'Chedworth'. One flower last year, four flowers this. I got it from Avon Bulbs, but I don't know who raised it.

3rd March 2007

Lachenalia 'Fransie' .
The Lachenalia have prospered this year. Usually they get stacked in the greenhouse for winter to keep them from frost, and they object to the shade and refuse to flower. This year they have been in a cold house in full sun, and loving it. This one is 'Fransie', flowering for the first time (due to my incompetence) since I got it in 2002. Made a mental note to take more risks with the cold next year (but I often lose my nerve in November).
