... out in the garden.

Rhododendron 'Hopeful' .
Among the unlikely events of the season comes a scattering of flowers from this Japanese Azalea. It grows by the front door and is getting far too bid, so I have a feeling that before long I will be out there with a spade finding a new home for it. A good thing that Azaleas tolerate moving so well. It will wait until April to give a full display.

2nd Decdember 2007

Schlumbergera 'Gold Charm' .
Just to emphasise the arrival of winter, the earliest of the Schlumbergera hybrids have started to flower. 'Gold Charm' can be a good yellow if it is warm enough. In the cold greenhouse here it shivers itself pink, with just a tinge of orange, but it is a good floriferous modern hybrid.

2nd December 2007

Hedychium 'Tai Monarch' .
A quick frost across the garden last week has gone again, without damaging the Hedychium, which has allowed 'Tai Monarch' to flower for the first time. Very pale salmon flowers on very tall canes. At this time of the year it is probably down to the weather how long I get to enjoy it for.
The outlook for next week is rain, with accompanying wet, gloom and short days.

2nd December 2007

Narcissus bulbocodium zaianicus lutescens .
I am just feeling my way with the hoop petticoat Narcissus. I grew a couple last year, and was impressed enough to try a few more forms this year. I am particularly pleased to have this one, because it provides some flowers that look fresh and cheerful among the wreckage of autumn. There are a few flowers about that really belong to the spring as well, but they look rather like I do if I get up a couple of hours too early.
Fresh and smiling, but a bit gormless.
