... out in the garden.

Hepatica americana Blue seedling .
Last weeks update got skipped I'm afraid - I spent the weekend indulging myself in the midlands and came back with a big box of plants to sort out. Nice relaxing job for the week I thought, but on sunday night the wind began to blow and the weather forecasters with their usual good cheer expected the worst storm since 1987!
The next morning I had three sheets ripped out of the roof of the greenhouse and a tree down, so all thoughts of relaxation went out the window. So this is a week for making the most of it, and that means Hepatica!
For a couple of years the Hepatica here have suffered as I have moved them around from one catastrophically bad location to another, and this year I am determined to get it right, and the plants are doing their best to help out.
I am delighted to finally have a blue flowered seedling of H.americana. For years I have been growing a mis-named H.acutiloba thinking it was the real thing. When I finally see the real thing, the distinction is obvious. H.acutiloba has ....acute lobes!

Hepatica nobilis pyrenaica Pink seedling .
The plants of H.nobilis from the Pyrenees have heavily mottled foliage and are sometimes listed as H.n.pyrenaica - I grow a couple of other colours as 'Pyrenean Marbles'. Whatever the name, this is the best pink seedling that I have seen from the group (and if I lose any more trees there will be nowhere to plant any of them).

16th March 2008

Hepatica nobilis japonica 'Ashwood mauve seedling' .
A pretty mauve seedling of H.n.japonica from Ashwood Nurseries (and part of last weekends haul).

Hepatica x media 'Sue White' .
Raised by Robin White at Blackthorn Nursery, and named after his wife. After a couple of decades of raising and selling the most wonderful and choice plants they will be opening the nursery for the last time next weekend and then retiring from retail sales, so you have one last chance...
And this very beautiful pink seedling of the hybrid H.(nobilis x transsylvanica) is where I am going to end this account!
