JEARRARD'S HERBAL

16th August 2026

Amaryllis belladonna .
Tennyson might almost have written " but in autumn he returns to his rootes." (In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.) It has been a week of autumn bulbs flowering.
The drought has continued, the garden is almost suspended in time as if dries slowly. Hydrangea are still holding on but there is a fragility about them as they cling in old age to the turgid reality of youth.
This Amaryllis came from the commercial stock of a local flower farm and could well be an x Amarygia, these things are now thoroughly mixed. It seems to have appreciated a long summer bake.

Barnardia japonica .
A vigorous Scilla relative from Japan. It has been very vigorous and reliable for me at the start of the sutumn bulb season.

Hedychium gardnerianum 'BSWJ.2524' .
On of ny best clones of Hedychium gardnerianum, flowering reliably in August. I havben't been able to trace any background information about it (so if you're out there Bleddyn).

Lycoris x houdyshelii .
I take ridiculous pride in Lycoris x houdyshelii but take very litle credit. I grow a number of Lycoris for the overwhelming joy of their occasinal ordinary leaves (hogwash). I hope for flowers but none ever appear. I think that is the universal experience of growers in the UK.
However this clone of Lycoris x houdyshelii flowers sometimes, if it is happy. I think this hot summer has helped. Many clones of Lycoris were imported from China in the early 2000s and the Americans have given a lot of them clonal names. I wish I knew what this had been called because it is quite remarkable.
