One of my favourite species of Dendrobium, not because I especially like the colour, or the size of the flowers but because it is tolerant. It will take a moderate frost under cover and still flower. Unfortunately it doesn't survive outside. It can't cope with winter wet, the roots rot off and it needs extra heat through the summer if it is going to produce decent pseudobulbs.
It grows naturally along a small section of the eastern coast of Australia. Although there are a number of colour variations, this red purple is the most common.

Even the seed pod is attractive.

A view of a group in flower. I have several clones of the species that differ in minor details that I will deal with individually.
