Primula sieboldii 'Duanes Choice'

Archive entry 30.04.17

Primula sieboldii seems to be coming back into fashion after a lull of a couple of decades. It is an excellent species for late spring, but the leaves die back very suddenly in the summer which isn't a habit that fits in all gardens.
Excellent in a pot, which is the driving force behind its commercial support. Not always as reliable in the open ground.

I got it from Beeches Nursery. Their label says:

"Brash American hybrid with soft purple flowers irregularly splashed pink and white. The edges of the petals incurve to show the darker reverses. Flowers mid to late spring. The scalloped leaves are dormant by summer. Never dry soil in part or full shade."

Penny's Primulas say:

"Flat blooming, slender notch petalled pin. Pink mottled petals, with deep pink bars on petal edges and deep pink reverse. Raised in USA. One of our more difficult Primula sieboldii cultivars."
