Sarracenia alata

Sarracenia alata has tall thin pitchers with variable red veining. The pale yellow flowers are among the first to appear in the spring. The petals can be almost white in the palest forms.
It occurs in the Gulf Coast states, from Alabama in the east , through to Texas in the west. There are two distinct populations. The species is absent from most of Louisiana.

Eastern Population

The eastern population just about extends into south-west Alabama, through Mississippi, and just crosses into south-eastern Louisiana. The population in south-eastern Louisiana has been declining. There are no recent observations, and the species may now be extinct there. Otherwise, this is the largest section of the population. It is described as common, but under threat from increasing human pressure. The plants typically grow in Pine savanna on heavy silty soils.
There is a suggestion that the plants at the south east of the range, in Alabama, tend to be shorter, darker red , and with a greater proportion of pubescent pitchers.

  • DeSoto National Forest
The Desoto National Forest extends across parts of ten counties in southern Mississippi (Perry Co, Wayne Co, Harrison Co, Forrest Co, Stone Co, Green Co, Jones Co, Jackson Co, George Co and Pearl River Co). A lot of plants in cultivation originate in "Desoto" , and this must relate to the Desoto National Forest, rather than Desoto County in the north of the state.

  • Western Population

The western population of Sarracenia alata is under threat. Plants are uncommon and declining. In South West Louisiana plants occur in Oak savanna, reverting to Pine savanna in East Texas. The easternmost forms tend to produce larger paler pitchers than is typical. Some forms in Texas show faint areoles (pale patches) in the upper parts.
