A Brazilian gesneriad that has been shown to tolerate a fair bit of cold. Grows from a tuber which looks like a turnip that has lost a fight with some coconut matting.
Large creamy yellow flowers, I have seen pictures of rather fetching forms with reddish markings in the throat but mine is as pale as moonlight. My plant came from Plant Delights Nursery, their description says: "This wonderful Brazilian gesneriad makes a small clump to 8" tall x 1' wide. The fuzzy, green, hand-sized leaves form a rosette which is topped from early summer until fall with large, pale yellow flowers, highlighted by cinnamon runway-like streaks to guide pollinators inside the flower. Sinningia conspicua has overwintered nicely for us in well-drained soils and a part-sun site." The Gesneriad Reference web says: "The species is very attractive and under some conditions sweetly scented. It is not difficult to grow, and produces flowers that are quite large relative to the plant size. The leaves are soft and somewhat hairy, unlike those of S. eumorpha which are smoother, and usually darker and somewhat shiny." |
